Series 16E is designed for extremely harsh environments - heavy contamination, dust, salt spray, flooding. The sensing element is protected by a fully sealed stainless steel housing rated IP68, completely dust-tight and resistant to aggressive salt-laden air, flooding and powerful water jets. The product is ideal for harsh indoor applications and severe outdoor environments. At its core is non-contact magnetostrictive measurement, providing high-precision, accurate absolute position measurement. The non-contact characteristic ensures easy installation and a very long mechanical service life. Models 160 (voltage output) / 161 (current output), S = single output / R = redundant output.
Product Overview
Series 16E is the harsh-environment enhanced version of Series 16, designed for extremely harsh conditions such as heavy pollution, dust, salt spray and flooding. The fully sealed stainless steel housing achieves IP68 - dust-tight and resistant to aggressive salt-laden air, flooding and powerful water jets.
The product is ideally suited to harsh indoor applications and severe outdoor environments: mining, metallurgical continuous casting, offshore platforms and chemical production lines, where conventional sensors struggle to survive over the long term. Non-contact magnetostrictive measuring technology ensures an extremely long mechanical service life.
Two modes are available: single output (S) and redundant output (R). The measuring range can be extended to 7600 mm with a maximum update time of 5.0 ms. A direct PVC cable outlet (1-10 m optional) makes wiring convenient and reliable.
Operating Principle
Series 16E uses the same non-contact magnetostrictive measurement principle as Series 16. The waveguide is sealed inside a fully enclosed stainless steel housing that resists attack from harsh external environments; the permanent magnet (position magnet) mounted on the piston moves with the piston, triggering the magnetostrictive effect in the waveguide, and the strain wave travels to the electronics module where it is detected and decoded. The key difference in Series 16E is its IP68 fully sealed stainless steel housing - compared with IP67 for the standard Series 16, it offers a higher level of dust and water protection and can be exposed to heavy contamination, dust, salt spray and flooding for long-term operation.

Installation Precautions
- 16E is a fully sealed IP68 design for extremely harsh environments; the cable outlet must still be sealed properly.
- For the direct PVC cable outlet, observe the bending radius and avoid bending at the root of the cable gland, which would damage the seal.
- When installing the fully sealed stainless steel housing, the mounting surface must be flat and the mounting hole aligned with the sensor rod centre.
- Although IP68 permits immersion, the cable sheath must be inspected regularly in permanently submerged installations.
- Non-contact measurement requires no maintenance, but the magnet ring must not touch the rod.
- Other installation and cleanliness requirements are the same as for the Series 16 built-in type; keep the assembly area dust-free.
- Mechanical interface same as Series 16: piston-rod bore ≥12.7 mm, cap Ø18G7, 350 bar working / 530 bar peak.
