Series 16R redundant design built-in magnetostrictive displacement sensor
Dual independent measurement channels for safety-critical applications
Series 16R adds redundant safety design on top of Series 16 - a dual-channel redundant magnetostrictive displacement sensor with two fully independent measuring channels. Each channel has its own waveguide, detection coil and signal processing circuit, with no mutual interference. It suits safety-critical applications (such as metallurgical continuous casters, large cranes and wind turbine pitch systems); simultaneous dual-channel output ensures system reliability - if either channel fails the other keeps working, meeting non-stop operation requirements.
Product Overview
Series 16R is a fully redundant safety-enhanced version based on the proven Series 16 built-in sensor. Two fully independent measuring channels operate in parallel as hot standbys for each other.
In safety-critical applications - such as mould level control on metallurgical continuous casters, hoisting height monitoring on large cranes and blade pitch angle feedback on wind turbines - if either channel develops a fault, the other takes over immediately, ensuring the system neither stops nor runs out of control.
Meets the non-stop operation requirements of safety-critical applications and can be used directly in industrial projects demanding high reliability.
Operating Principle
Series 16R uses a dual-channel redundant magnetostrictive measuring architecture. Two independent waveguides are arranged in parallel in the same stainless steel pressure tube, each with its own complete excitation circuit and detection coil. A single external permanent magnet acts on both waveguides simultaneously, triggering two independent magnetostrictive strain waves; two electronics modules each detect their own strain wave and output an independent position signal. This hardware-level redundancy ensures that a single component failure will not cause loss of position information, complying with the IEC 61508 functional safety standard.

Installation Precautions
- 16R is a redundant dual-channel design for safety-critical applications. The two measuring channels are fully independent; fix each one separately and avoid common-cause failures.
- Route both outputs to independent acquisition channels to simplify diagnostics, comparison and switchover.
- Other installation and cleanliness requirements are the same as for the Series 16 built-in type; keep the assembly area dust-free.
- Mechanical interface same as Series 16: piston-rod bore ≥12.7 mm, cap Ø18G7, 350 bar working / 530 bar peak.
Pricing Notes
Because of its two independent measuring channels and safety redundant design, Series 16R is priced above the standard single-channel model. The price depends on the measuring range, channel configuration and certification requirements. For safety-related applications, please state your redundancy requirements so we can provide a quotation.
