Series 16T triple redundant magnetostrictive displacement sensor
Triple independent measurement systems for ultimate safety - ship propulsion, power plants, train tilt
Series 16T adds triple redundant safety design on top of Series 16 - three fully independent measuring systems integrated in one stainless steel protective tube, with a single permanent magnet acting on all three to produce three independent position outputs. It is designed for applications with extremely high safety and continuous operation requirements, such as ship propulsion systems, power plants and train tilting technology. The fully sealed stainless steel housing reaches IP67, completely dust-tight, salt spray resistant and water jet resistant. If any measuring channel fails, the others keep working, meeting non-stop operation requirements. Models 160 (voltage output) / 161 (current output), T = triple redundant.
Product Overview
Series 16T is a triple redundant safety-enhanced version based on the proven Series 16 built-in sensor. Three fully independent measuring channels operate in parallel as hot standbys for each other, designed for industrial applications with the highest safety requirements.
Applications include rudder position feedback on ship propulsion systems, steam turbine valve control in power plants and tilt angle monitoring on train tilting systems. In these applications a sensor failure can have catastrophic consequences; the triple redundant design ensures the system can still run safely if one - or even two - channels fail.
The fully sealed stainless steel housing achieves IP67: dust-tight and resistant to aggressive salt spray, flooding and powerful water jets. With a pressure rating of 350 bar (530 bar peak) it can be installed directly inside a hydraulic cylinder.
Operating Principle
Series 16T uses a triple redundant magnetostrictive measuring architecture. Three independent waveguides are arranged in parallel in the same stainless steel pressure tube, each with its own complete excitation circuit and detection coil. A single external permanent magnet acts on all three waveguides simultaneously, triggering three independent magnetostrictive strain waves; three electronics modules each detect their own strain wave and output an independent position signal. This hardware-level triple redundancy ensures that even single or double component failures will not cause loss of position information, meeting the highest safety level requirements for non-stop operation.

Installation Precautions
- 16T is a triple redundant design: the three measuring channels are independent. Fix each one separately and avoid common-cause failures.
- Route the three outputs to independent acquisition channels to simplify diagnostics, comparison and switchover.
- For the fully sealed stainless steel housing, the mounting surface must be perpendicular to the sensor rod and the mounting hole aligned with the rod centre.
- D60 6-pin connector pin assignment: 1 = signal (black) / 2 = signal ground (white) / 3 = N.C. (yellow) / 4 = N.C. (green) / 5 = +24 V (red) / 6 = 0 V (blue).
- For the direct cable outlet version, observe the bending radius and avoid bending at the root of the connector.
- Other installation and cleanliness requirements are the same as for the Series 16 built-in type; keep the assembly area dust-free.
- Mechanical interface same as Series 16: piston-rod bore ≥12.7 mm, cap Ø18G7, 350 bar working / 530 bar peak.
Pricing Notes
Because of its three independent measuring channels and the highest level of safety redundancy, Series 16T is priced above the standard and dual redundant models. The price depends on the measuring range, channel configuration and connection method. For safety-related applications, please state the required functional safety level so we can provide a quotation.
